Certificat from Caen University
Overview
The Certificat d’Etudes Juridiques Françaises et Normandes will again be taught locally with the two tutors from the University of Caen travelling to Guernsey to deliver the course in person at Les Cotils Centre. The timetable is available here and the first teaching day is Tuesday 27 August 2025.
The course has three elements, Droit Coutumier (the history and development of Norman customary law), Institutions (the history of Norman public institutions) and Obligations (French contract and tort law).
Obligations will be taught in English and a course text, in English, together with English translations of key extracts from relevant sections of the Code Civile will be provided prior to the first teaching session.
Droit Coutumier and Institutions will be taught in English and French (approximately an 80/20 split). Course texts are provided but are in French.
The oral examinations are conducted in English, though any candidate wishing to answer in French is more than welcome to do so! Each topic is examined separately on different days. Each candidate will be given 20 minutes to prepare their answer (closed book) and a further 20 minutes to answer a question. The questions will be provided immediately prior to the preparation time. Candidates will have a week between the end of the teaching programme and the start of the examinations for revision. During this time, the two tutors may be available to offer a revision session if requested by the candidates.
Attendance at all classes in mandatory. If a candidate is unable to attend the teaching venue in person on a particular day, it may be possible for them to join the session via Teams. Please contact, Elizabeth Dene (Elizabeth.dene@mourant.com), the course co-ordinator, to discuss any particular arrangements.
The teaching schedule is available here. Please note the course starts during the last week in August 2025.
Enrolment
We expect to be able to offer 12 places for the course each year. This is the preferred limit of the Université de Caen.
Any general announcements and communications will be made via the Bar Secretary to the Bar. We would remind you that it is a pupil supervisor's responsibility to pass such information on as appropriate. Updates will be made where possible to both Institute of Law websites (Guernsey and Jersey).
